We researched HostGator's current shared and VPS plans, features, support channels, and policies directly from hostgator.com and its knowledgebase on 2026-07-20. Pricing and specs are verified against the operator's own pricing pages; an independent 2026-dated review was used to confirm the renewal pricing wasn't showing a stale or region-locked promo. Trusthost has not yet purchased a HostGator test account, so this is desk research against the operator's own published pages, not a hands-on test.

Pros and cons
HostGator in 2026
HostGator has been running shared hosting since 2002 and now hosts more than 2 million websites, making it one of the longer-tenured names in the budget hosting space. It's part of Newfold Digital, the same group that owns Bluehost, Web.com, and Network Solutions, which means much of the underlying cPanel hosting stack is shared across those brands.
What stands out
The entry-level Hatchling plan undercuts most competitors on headline price while still including a free Cloudflare CDN, free SSL, and a free automated migration tool: features some budget hosts charge extra for. The catch, shared with most of the industry, is a steep renewal jump: Hatchling's $3.75/mo intro rate renews at $10.99/mo, close to a 3x increase.
Bottom line
HostGator is a reasonable pick for a first site on a tight budget, especially if you value the free migration tool and don't mind budgeting for the renewal price ahead of time. Businesses that need phone support from day one, or want a choice of data center region, should look at the Baby plan or a different host entirely.
Is HostGator right for you?
Good fit if you want a low headline price with room to grow: the entry plans allow 10-100 websites and unmetered bandwidth, and the free migration tool makes switching from another host straightforward.
Better to avoid if you plan to keep the plan long-term without renegotiating (the renewal price is roughly 3x the intro rate), or if you need phone support on the cheapest tier, which is chat-only.
